Facts About 2012
Posted In: Events & Holidays.
There is a great deal of mythology surrounding 2012, with some people insisting that it will bring about the end of the world. Whether 2012 brings about Armageddon or not, there are still some interesting things to consider about this new year.
The world will end
Many people believe that 2012 will be the year the world ends. This prediction is based on a number of different sources, one of which is the Mayan Calendar, which seems to have predicted 2012 as the end of the world several hundred years ago. Not everyone believes so and some thinks that it means transition to a new era, not the end as we know it. However, many still believes the end of the world is coming and they think that an earthquake will signal the beginning of the 2012 apocalypse.
Predictions for how the world will end in 2012 are not limited to earthquakes. Some people think that massive volcano eruptions will be to blame while others think that extraterrestrials will invade the planet as they do in the hit TV series “The Event.” Still others are convinced that diseases like the Swine Flu or asteroids from outer space will ultimately wipe out humanity in 2012. Of course, such doomsday scenarios fail to consider the very real problems that humanity is dealing with right now, such as nuclear proliferation and global warming.
It’s an Olympic year
The 2012 Olympics will be held in London.
Asteroid passing by
NASA is carefully tracking a very large asteroid (Asteroid 2012 DA14) that it predicts will come very close to Earth in 2012. It will miss Earth by a few thousand miles, but will still be the closest Asteroid encounter experienced since monitoring began.
112 popes until doomsday
St. Malachy of the Catholic faith was a medieval monk who predicted that there would be 112 Popes until the Doomsday explained in the Bible came to pass. The last Pope will be called Peter the Roman. The current Pope, Benedict XVI is the 111th in the succession.
It is anticipated that Vladimir Putin, sometimes called the last son of the KGB, will regain power in Russia in 2012.
Sun’s magnetic poles will flip
NASA predicts that the magnetic poles of the Sun will reverse in 2012, which some people believe will allow harmful radiation from the Sun to enter the Earth’s atmosphere or even damage the atmosphere beyond the point that it can sustain life. The last time the magnetic poles flipped was in 2001.
In the final Episode of the X-Files, aliens invade earth on December 22nd, 2012, one day after the apocalypse.
Center of the galaxy
The Sun is supposed to pass directly over galactic plane on December 21st, 2012.
What’s special about 2012?
2012 will be an interesting year from both mathematical and historical point-of-views. 2012 can be divided by four; therefore, it will be a leap year. The first day of the year will be a Sunday. 2012 will be the centennial year of famous mathematician, scientist and inventor of modern computers, Alan Turning and is called as the “Alan Turing Year” by the scientific societies.
